Message from the Chief

Shelbyville has a population of approximately 22,000 and covers 16 square miles of patrol area. The Police Department has 41 full-time police officers. There are 31 patrol officers, 5 detectives, 2 administrators, 2 narcotics officers and 1 DARE officer. There are 3 secretaries with duties that include, but are not limited to gun permits, payroll, parking tickets, transcribing statements, and much more. There are 9 dispatchers to take incoming calls for police assistance and emergencies, which include fire and ambulance runs. We currently have 15 Reserve Police Officers. The Reserve Officers volunteer their services and are very helpful with local sporting events, traffic direction or assisting officers on the streets.

The police department receives between 18,000 and 22,000 calls annually. Shelbyville is a very safe community, but is not totally free of criminal activity. Please remember 911 is for emergency calls only. To request service or make a police report dial 317-392-2511 or 317-392-5108. Copies of reports or administrative needs call 317-392-5106.
